SUSE 11.0 can be upgraded to KDE 4.1. To do this go to this page and click on 'install via 1 click'

This generated 4 conflict errors. In each case I selected 'do not install'

This stopped KDE from generating any sound notifications. To fix this I found that installing phonon-backend-xine (using yast) then reboot seemed to fix it.

System Settings
KDE Control Centre now seems to have been replaced by a program called systemsettings. This program does not seem to appear in the start button so I started it by typing <alt><f2> then systemsettings:

This started the following program.
Under display I made sure display power management was turned off:

In KDE control centre (KControl)
Appearance and themes -> screen saver -> Start automatically turn off
or from KDesktop (started by right clicking on desktop where there are no icons and select configure desktop)
KDesktop -> screen saver -> Start automatically turn off
also screen blanking
KDesktop -> display -> power control:
remove 'x' from enable specific display power management
(Yast -> System -> Power Management has now gone)
KDE utilities
Yast Software Management does not find KDE utilities like KEdit and Quanta+ by name, instead we need to search for the following package names within Yast Software Management.
